Dearest Jo-Anne,
Looks like Grog derived from the Dutch.
We always used it when I was growing up for getting rid of an upcoming cold.
Make yourself a grog = with e.g. rum or cognac, hot water, honey and lemon.
How to make a grog? Grog is an old home remedy that used to work often drunk to reduce flu symptoms. A real grog contains alcohol and since alcohol slightly lowers the body temperature, this can have an effect on fever. It used to be the custom to take a grog against flu, nowadays people rely more on modern medicines. Still, the recipe for grog hasn’t been lost.
The recipe for making grog has been around since the year 1740. It was officially commissioned by the Royal Navy and it was presented as a so-called horse remedy. To make (and drink) a grog yourself, you must be 18 years or older, because there is alcohol in it. It is drunk against flu and colds. How well it works is debatable. Grogs were basically drunk by pirates at sea. Whether it really helps, it is best to ask the doctor.
At least I’ve had some grogs as Dad used this remedy for suppressing any upcoming cold back then.
Hugs,
Mariette
